What’s Really in the Fabrics We Love
By Katie Holter, Founder of August & Ivy™
I’ve always loved the look of modern, well-made baby and motherhood essentials. The soft fabrics, the timeless shapes, the calm simplicity of it all. But once I began learning more about how many common textiles are produced, I couldn’t ignore it.
Before starting August & Ivy™, I wrote for a newspaper focused on circular economics, waste, and manufacturing impact. That experience gave me a deeper understanding of the textile industry and how materials are transformed before they reach our homes.
After having three children in five years, I became even more thoughtful about the fabrics that touch our babies’ skin every day. I wanted to create something natural, refined, and made with care.
You’ve probably seen “bamboo” everywhere. What many people don’t realize is that most bamboo fabrics on the market are actually rayon or viscose derived from bamboo pulp. This involves a chemical process that transforms the plant fiber into a soft textile.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. It simply wasn’t the direction I wanted to take.
I began asking a different question. What if we could create the same softness and comfort using natural cotton fibers known for their strength and longevity?
That’s why we chose Peruvian Pima cotton. Its extra-long fibers create a fabric that feels smooth, breathable, and substantial without being heavy. It holds its shape beautifully, resists pilling, and becomes softer over time.
We’re building August & Ivy™ around materials that feel elevated, thoughtfully sourced, and designed to last. Because when it comes to our homes and our children, the details matter.
Every design we create is intentionally developed and currently patent pending, blending innovation with purpose.
What’s coming is modern, functional, and designed with care.
We’re so glad you’re here.
